Grab a bucket and get to BAILING!

It’s that season again.  You know the one.  The season when we need to get out our buckets and start bailing!!!!!

"And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full." - Mar 4:37

“And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.” – Mar 4:37

Jesus SAID to the disciples, “Let’s cross over to the other side.”

Hmmmm…. When the Creator of the Universe makes a casual suggestion like, “Let’s cross over…”, well, I would say that a lesson is in the works.

Jesus had just been preaching to the multitudes.  Many were still there near the shore. They dismissed the “many”, but some determined to follow the disciples and Jesus in boats.

He got into the ship

The storm winds began- it became ferocious. The waves beat into the ship and it was filling with water to the point of sinking.

Jesus was asleep on a pillow in the back (stern) of the ship. The disciples woke him up, Crying, “Master don’t you care that we are all going to die?”

Jesus’ response:

“Why are you terrified? Oh you of little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still” and the wind ceased and there occurred a great calm.

Then he said, “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?

And they feared- and said,

“What kind of man commands the winds and the seas to obey him?”

Thoughts:

When we are in the midst of storms and the waves are crashing in to the boat, the water level is filling up and we see no rescue in sight…. when we are overwhelmed…. terrified….. panic-ing, when our buckets aren’t big enough to keep up with the water flowing in on all sides…. when we look around for God and find him peacefully sleeping with his head on a pillow….unconcerned with the circumstances, undaunted by the storm, unfazed by the crashing waves or sinking state of the boat… when we feel so desperate that we cry out to God… “Don’t you even care that we are sinking”…..  that is the precise moment that we see HIM:

The sea is obedient to Him.

The waves do his bidding.

He- the ONE who created the universe, who said “Let there be” and there was… That same ONE is IN THE BOAT WITH YOU!!!!!!!  HE is there. Not somewhere else… but there… in the very midst of your storm.  In the middle, getting wet, being tossed, sinking with you…. But HE is not concerned, because He knows a secret, He is with you.. He will never leave you. He has a plan, and is walking through it with you… side by side.  Not some distant god that you drop food off to…. but the One who speaks to the seas and demands calm… the ONE who tells the wind to be at PEACE.  He is in the boat.  If you go down… He goes down…. If YOU sink, HE sinks… Just look up and keep your eyes on Him. Because, friend, you are never safer than when you are face to face with the Master.

Can you even imagine a better place to be than IN THE BOAT WITH HIM, even in the midst of a raging storm? Nor can I.

Let’s be those who would purpose to say: “I know You’ve got this!” and curl up on the pillow next to Him.

John 14:27 (KJV)
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
